Become a Falconer

If you are interested in becoming a falconer in New Mexico, here is a short overview of what to do:

  1. Get to know other NM Falconers by emailing us at NMFalconry@gmail.com.

  2. Read and learn as much as possible. Utilize our recommended reading list. Read the Federal and State regulations - links to each are located on the Regulations section of this website.

  3. Contact New Mexico Department of Game and Fish to schedule your written test.

  4. After getting to know other NM Falconers, you will need to obtain a sponsor - a local falconer who will help guide you. Having passed the NMDGF test will help show you are serious.

  5. Obtain the required equipment and build a suitable raptor enclosure.

  6. Be inspected by a qualified NM Falconer or NMDGF. After successful completion of the inspection your Apprentice Permit will be issued allowing the trapping of your first bird.
